The Curriculum

The staff at Bower Park

Nearest have spent a great deal of time planning a balanced curriculum for your child. We have divided the week into thirty 50 minute periods. Each Department has been given a part of this time to meet in full all the requirements of the National Curriculum.

The aim is to be broad, balanced and responsive to the needs of pupils making the transition from primary school. We are aware of all the excellent work we know goes on in the primary schools and our intention is to build on the enthusiasm they have encouraged; in particular we look to build on all aspects of Literacy and Numeracy.

Setting

At the start of Year 7 our pupils are placed in Ability sets for much of their teaching. These sets are created following visits by our staff to the Primary Schools and on the basis of known attainment from Key Stage 2 results, reading tests, etc. These sets are regularly revised using information gathered via:

  • Standardised testing carried out early in the Autumn Term.
  • Teacher assessment

The ability sets vary across the subjects so it is possible, for example, for a pupil to be in a top set in one subject and a middle or lower set in another subject.

Though much of our teaching is done in ability sets, our Tutor groups are mixed ability, as are a small number of teaching groups where staff feel that the subject is better taught in this way.

Sometimes you need a helping hand to achieve what you want and that goes for getting good grades at school. We all know how important it is to get good GSCE's and A level's and sometimes your children need "one on one" or group tutoring to achieve it. We have tutors that cover London and the South east of England from our pool of qualified and security checked teachers.
