Francis Bacon Maths and Computing College is an expanding and popular school with 900 students on roll. It is the only secondary school in the highly populated, south-east sector off St. Albans and serves a mixed community. It opened in 1963 as a three-form entry grammar school, and in 1969, it became a five-form entry, 11-18 mixed comprehensive school. We have a positive ethos of high expectations and achievement as well as care and support.
We have a diverse intake of students from private and rented accommodation. It includes about 18% from minority ethnic groups, many of whom are of Bangladeshi origin. Almost all of these students have good English language skills and are making excellent academic progress.
The Sixth Form is fully comprehensive. There are over 100 students in the Sixth Form and this number is increasing annually. Most Sixth Formers are following three or four AS/A2 level courses or a GNVQ course or a combination of the two. We are part of an active and well organised consortium with two other St Albans schools (Marlborough and Townsend) and the local college. These working links allow for greater flexibility and variety in 14-19 provision.
As a Specialist Mathematics and Computing college we continue to develop our approaches to learning in the classroom and to push forward our links with the community.
