Gordon's School was founded in 1886 by public subscription, at the express wish of Queen Victoria, as the National Memorial to General Gordon, who was killed at Khartoum in January 1885. Since its foundation the School has been privileged to have the reigning Monarch as its Patron.

Originally a boys’ home, and then a boys’ boarding school, today Gordon’s is a Voluntary Aided co-educational state school catering for full, weekly and day boarders. It is supported by the Gordon Foundation, an independent charitable trust established in 1888, which charges boarding fees for all categories of boarders. We are a small school, but this is one of our undoubted strengths. A school of 650 pupils means that every single boy and girl can truly be known and treated as an individual, with their talents recognised and nurtured.

At Gordon’s great importance is placed on the quality of teaching in the classroom because we strongly believe that schools are first and foremost centres for learning. Coupled with this is a very firm commitment to traditional values: we insist on high standards, good discipline and the values which parents and society respect.

The school’s Ofsted Report says in its opening statement, “Gordon’s is an exceptional school with many excellent and outstanding features”. Pupils’ behaviour and attitude to school was described as excellent, and relationships between staff and pupils as outstanding. The inspectors described the quality of the extra-curricular programme as going beyond excellence. “Pupils emerge from the school as articulate, pleasant, well-rounded and confident youngsters”. The quality of leadership was described as excellent and the inspectors wrote, ”A very clear direction is set with an unstinting focus on the pursuit of excellence. There is no compromise on standards and the very good quality of education provided promotes high achievement”. (A copy of the Ofsted Report is available from the school).

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools has listed Gordon’s as one of Britain’s outstanding schools. Examination results are excellent and for the last seven years Gordon’s has been ranked the top state school in Surrey in the government performance tables. Gordon’s is also regularly ranked in the top thirty non-selective schools in Britain.

Although such results are pleasing, schools should never be judged on examination results alone. At Gordon’s we believe that the only practical way to gain an accurate picture of a school is to see it in action during a typical working day, to visit lessons and to talk to staff and pupils.
